Trucking: carrier obligation, sound business decisions, mileage rate

Question
I am contracted to a carrier in which I get 84 % of the gross pay.
I believe the loads pay more than what they say they pay, I have asked to see the rate and I'm told no thats confiedental, .Do I have the right to see the freight rate or who can I contact

Answer
Lenny, what kind of business are you dealing with?  If they won't show you the freight bill I wouldn't trust them.  What are they hiding.  Calling the rates confidential is a load of crap.  You should be treated like a business partner and entitled to the information to make sound business decisions.  Confidential information is shared every day with the companies, lawyers, accountants, and auditors.  You have an obligation to keep the information confidential between you and your carrier but there is no good reason to hide the bill unless they are cheating you.  84% seems like a high percentage so maybe they are trying to skim off the fuel surcharge or accessorials.  Having said that, I am not aware of any law against bad business practices.

I would be looking for a better (honest) carrier to contract with, even at a lower percentage or a mileage rate.

Best of luck.
Jim.
