Trucking: Independent Freight Finder, business licenses, distribution company

Question
I am looking into starting a business as an Independent Freight Finder, I will work for the carrier for a flat fee per load procurred straight from a shipper, manufacturer, or distribution company.  I will not be a broker.  I will not process any of the paperwork or dispatch the truck, I will only find freight and bring it back to the carrier.  I already have a contract written up for this.  I know about double brokering and will not be doing that either.  Do you know if there are any special licenses or insurances I will need to perform this service?

Answer
Dianne, you do not need a brokerage license to do what you are proposing.  You will be a contract or commission sales agent.  Normal business licenses and insurance are all you would need to operate this way, unless your client carriers have other requirements.
Benefit to the carrier is they only pay for results and you can sell for multiple carriers to cover all niches as long as you avoid conflicts.  Don's play one carrier against another or you won't last.  Having said that, if you can sell freight you can make good money with low overhead.
Best of luck.
