Trucking: cdl, cdl test, state dmv

Question
i drive a 20 foot straight truck in ny and and thinking of moving to vt and i just lost out on a job driving a straight truck over here that required a cdl and i a m not sure what kind of cdl it was only hauling milk products

does ny/vt or other states have a cdl test that can be taken that will cover most straight trucks with basic cargo i have no interest in driving a big truck but would love a lower level cdl that would have covered me for this job

Also check the state DMV or DOT websites.  They should all have info on the CDL program with their states.
