Trucking: cdl exemptions, license classifications, dulley

Question
i am thinking of buying a truck and trailer to haul cars . i was looking to get a 3500 or 4500 series dulley and pull a 3 to 5 car trailer .kauffman makes a new mine 5 car trailer and the advertisement shows it behing pulled by a 3500 dulley . i know the truck can handle the load but it has to weigh more then 26000 lbs loaded with cars . will it be a violation if the truck is heavy or do they fall below the radar because you dont need a cdl lisense ? thank you mike from new jersey

Answer
Mike, I think you will need a Class A CDL for this combination:

 Classes of License:

The Federal standard requires States to issue a CDL to drivers according to the following license classifications:

Class A -- Any combination of vehicles with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.

Class B -- Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds GVWR.

Class C -- Any single vehicle, or combination of vehicles, that does not meet the definition of Class A or Class B, but is either designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver, or is placarded for hazardous materials.
