Trucking: trucking in louisana, equipment relocation, dot authority

Question
Hi jim.im a trucker based in california. im thinking about relocating to louisana.what would be the best way to get my trucks there i have 4 of them would it be better to buy trip permits thru arizona. new mexico.texas.are apportioned plates. and do i have to be in IFTA.

Answer
Brian, I don't have enough info to make a recommendation, but I assume by your question that this is a local business that normally does not run out of state.  You will need to quotes from companies that handle equipment relocation for the cost of having them moved.  Then you have a benchmark to determine if driving them makes sense.  For a single trip on each truck you should not have to join IFTA or get an apportioned plate.  The trip permit should suffice, but you will need to see what kind of revenue you can make on the trip and deduct the out of pocket expenses, driver, fuel, R&M, etc. and see what you have left.  Assuming it's a positive number and you will save the expense of having the units delivered it would make sense to take the extra effort.  Just be sure if you do not have Interstate DOT Authority that you are running under a carrier that does.
Hope this gives you a little direction.
Jim.
