Trucking: drug test, random drug test, standard operating procedure

Question
Hi Mike, I informed my driver of 14yrs. that he was picked for a random drug test.He responded that it would not be a good idea, stating he would most likely fail.We obviously removed him from the road, but we do not have any written procedures in place to take corrective action. What would you recommend? We are a private company with 24 drivers.....George,South Jersey

Answer
I would start an S.O.P (standard operating procedure) right away. What would you like to do with the driver? Without an S.O.P in place, he can find a loophole (unlikely). I would send him to rehab (his tab) and inform him he will be picked for a random at will for a year.
