Trucking: new to the trucking buisness, schnieder national, truck driving schools

Question
QUESTION: I am currently looking into some truck driving schools. I have a small disability with my right leg but no big deal, I'm currently on crutches due to a recent leg surgery in '06 but am getting much better and stronger. I love to drive and have always loved to drive. The problem I think I would have is getting in and out of the truck because of the steps are so far apart. I'm kind of short, well 5'5" but I was just wondering if that is strenuous getting in your truck and hooking up and unhooking from trailer. The reason I want a career in trucking is the money, I love to drive and travel, and my dad was a Coal Truck driver for 34 years until being killed in his asphalt truck in 2005 by tank truck that pulled across his path of road. But please respond and Thanks in advance.

ANSWER: Sorry about your Father.
where there's a will, there's a way. to offset the cost of school, look at the publications at truckstops and call companies that offer training for free, like Schnieder National and Swift.
Getting in and out will not be a problem with the newer tractors, even with a disability. I think you will do fine!! Good Luck. Mike

QUESTION: Hey Mike yeah my dad he was what got me into trucking he owned his own trucks and I helped work on them. But also one more question was I'm actually a newly wed just got married in June 07 and she is kind of afraid that i will be gone for a week or more at a time. I was wondering if some jobs give some home time or work it out for you to be home a little more than others? I mean seems like they would because I'm sure a lot of truck drivers quit a job because not enough home time. but anyways thanks for the quick reply.

Answer
Brandon. First off, congrats on your wedding!! Now, being new to the game, you have to make your bones for the first year. It will be tough for the first year, but it will be worth it. Call up Old Dominion in your area, they will hire students, you might have a dedicated run, out and back, home more than twice a week and weekends. You and the Mrs. need to remember that if the love is strong, you can get through anything. COMMUNICATE! I am married with 4 kids and i team drive and leave out on Sunday night, and come home on Friday night. The best time is when I leave for work and when I come home to my family. It takes both of you to make it work. Remember, use common sense out there, I might be driving out there with my family!! Also, drivers jump from job to job is the dream of the grass being greener, not true. Good Luck. Mike
