Trucking: Whats all involved, dot number, transport business

How is it going? My name is Corey Rolle, I live in Atlanta, Ga, and Im interested in going into the auto transport business.  My stepfather has experience in the field, but I want to do it on my own and get things rolling.  What exactly are the steps or the process needed to get on the road.  I'm looking to start off with a Dooley and a trailer and see where it goes from there.  Just got out of the military, and I think working for myself would be the best thing for me. What do I need to do as far as paper work, what type of truck and trailer do you recommend, and any qualifications I may need.  Any answers you can give me would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you
