Trucking: truck business:starting out, metro atlanta area, heartsfield

Question
I read an article by Tim D. Brady about new start ups. I have an idea to do local hot-shot delivery of freight or food or furniture, etc., in the metro Atlanta area. Is it possible to get contracts at a busy airport like Heartsfield? What about procuement?

Answer
Hi Charles,

Contracts like that are hard to get for a one man operation, simply because there will be concerns about you being able to handle all of the freight.  Still, it is worth a try.  I've never tried to bid an airport contract, so I could only guess about how to go about it.  It would require contacting the airport authority for open bids.

I would look into leasing out to a trucking company that runs hot shots.  There are plenty in Atlanta and this way, you don't have to worry about finding loads, getting paid, or many of the headaches.  It will also give you a chance to learn the business, then later on you can start your own business and run under your own authority.

Good luck!
