Trucking: Hauling, ford f350, small business administration

Question
Trying to get in the hauling business. Starting up a business proposal for a government grant to get funding for truck, trailer, etc. Are there any agencies you know of who would fund for this type of business? Also wanted to know how do you figure out the price of the cars that's being hauled? Want to drive a ford f350 or f450 with a gooseneck 48ft. trailer.

Answer
Hi Cedric.

Contact the Small Business Administration for some help.  They'll help you get funding.

Prices for hauling cars really vary.  You can go by the size.  Is it a compact, mid-size, full-size, truck or SUV?  The bigger, the more expensive.  Why?  It takes up more trailer room and is heavier (so you'll burn more fuel).  Does it run or do you have to winch it on?  Also, is there a specific time for pick-up and delivery or do you have a couple day window?  The big question, where is the pick-up and delivery?  If your going to Denver, great.  If you have to go 2 hours past Denver in the mountains off main highways, get paid extra for that.  Generally, you can charge a flat rate per mile and adjust as necessary.  Call some competitors to get an idea on rates.

Good luck!
