Answer
Hi Brian,

You'll have to get your own Authority, IFTA and so forth.  Sites like www.dotauthority.com can help you with that.  Before I did anything, I would contact your state's DOT department and see what their requirements are.  They'll want to know what your gross weight will be.

You can contact companies like www.progressivecommercial.com for all of your insurance needs.  There are plenty of companies out there, but shop around and stick with the bigger ones.  On my trucks, I have $1 million policies.  Some guys have up to $5 million.  Your will be somewhat less, but it depends on what you haul.  ALWAYS have enough insurance.

Finally, (once you decided what you want to haul), contact load brokers in your area.  Sites like www.getloaded.com can help you out too.  This can get you started and help you find brokers that deal with Hot Shots.  If your looking to lease out, Jones Motor Freight is probably the country's largest Hot Shot company.

As far as the money, it all depends what you run and where.  Some accounts are better than others.  Over time, you'll know who you want to haul for.  The money is there, just draw up a business plan first.

If you have any problems, go to sites like www.expeditorsonline.com and ask questions in their forum.  There are a lot of Hot Shot drivers there.  Also, don't forget to join OOIDA (www.ooida.com).  They can help with a lot too!

Good Luck!
