Trucking: fuel tax and log book, new england travel, stayes

Question
Hi,

My question is this, I am based in Massachusetts and I leased my tractor to in intermodal company doing local container work. My truck is registerd in Indiana because thats where the company does there regs..I am a little confused about how the IFTA works, am I only required to keep track of miles traveled outside of Ma since that is where my IFTA is ? I mostly travel in Ma with some other New England travel but not much. Also as far as logbooks, is it true that if not traveling outside a  75 mile radius from my base can I put on duty not driving in log or must I track every move?  Thank you for your help

Answer
Hello Will, You will need to keep record of miles you travel in each state, and have original fuel tickets for all fuel you purchase. The return is to be made quarterly to the state where you have the fuel permit from. This may be thru the company you are leased with or you may do it on your own accout with the state.  The report is required each quarter of the year.
Logs:  You will need to keep logs for each day if you travel out of state. You are to show driving time for hours you drive. Keep within the driving limits: 11 hours after 10 hours off - 8 of which must be off duty or in sleeper.
14 hour rule, No driving after being on duty for 14 hours.
The 75 air mile rule is for local driver that stayes within 1 state.  He must go to work and return to same location with in 12 hours. and keep records like a time card..
