Trucking: Getting Started, hot shot business, trucking sites

Question
I have an 2005 F350 dually diesel and would like to get started in the Hot Shot business. At this point, I would prefer to just use my vehicle and drive for someone else instead of trying to start up my on company. I'm based in Knoxville, Tennessee. How could I get started?

Answer
There are plenty of trucking sites that you could go to for information on specific companies. Go to them and simple type in "Hotshot". I really like Hot Shot Express and Jones Motor Freight, though, I think they might be one in the same now.  Look them up at http://www.jonesmotor.com/hotshot  Then simply tell them what you told me.  Fill out an application and they will walk you through the rest.

If you don't like what they offer, than search out other companies in your area via the Internet or yellow pages.  Fill out apps and see who meets your criteria.  Any decent size company would help you out and guide you until your up and running for them.

Look at the numbers close.  Not only see what you will average per mile or load, but is there layover pay, discounts on fuel, is there a trailer lease, etc.  I always use to apply to a number of companies, then right out the pros and cons of each.

Good luck!
