Trucking: Starting out, trucking jobs, trucking companies

Question
I have just graduated driving school and am wondering if you have any suggestions on good companies to get some experience with. My buddy went with Stevens transport out of Dallas,he said the recruiter mislead him on time away from home right off the bat, what was supposed to be 5 weeks then home was really closer to 8. The policy for time home was 1 day for every week worked. 4 days out of a month seems a bit slight, is that the usual? Can one get good local driving experience without going out on the over the road route? How do I research a company to find out about policies or accuracies before I actually work for them. I do not want to be labled a "jumper", but would like to find the right fit in companies before I make too many bad choices. I live in Michigan very close to Flint(30 miles east)smack dab between Flint and Port Huron, which seems like an ideal location for Michigan. I appreciate your help and Thanks, Dave

Answer
Hi Dave, Sorry I was late getting to your question.
Michigan is a good state for trucking jobs. There should be many companies that operate short haul.  Suggest you scan the internet for trucking companies. Many have ads for drivers.  Another idea is to visit some truck stops and talk with some drivers.  Most of them will be glad to share some info with you. About staying on road, norm is for 3 - 4 weeks.  I drove for 6 years, and stayed out only 2 weeks at a time.  I did own my own truck, and leased to companies.   Good Luck.   J P Long.
