Trucking: Trucking Question, long haul trucking, radious

Question
James,

I'm hoping that you might be able to help me out with some really basic truck hauling questions that I have.  I'm doing a report and am having some difficulty finding the general definitions for:

long-haul trucking
local use trucking
Trailer use trucking

The report is on the usage of GPS-based tracking systems and these three segments are mentioned quite a bit.  I'm pretty sure that local is defined as within 100 miles.

Thanks for any help,

Andrew

Answer
Hi Andrew!
You are correct that Local hauling typically is limited to a 100 mile radious. once in a while it may creep a little bit further. Local drivers are generally home every night.
Long haul, or OTR (Over The Road) can take you pretty much anywhere on the contenant.
Trailer trucking, one would assume, is pulling a trailer. My guess is, this is opposed to the little streight trucks we see running around town. (I personally don't consider that trucking)  :)   Good Luck!
