Trucking: CDL license, how to get a cdl license, equipment updates

Question
My husband wants to know how to get a CDL license. He DID HAVE one about 25 years ago, and now wants to enter that work again.  Must he take a long course, a refresher course, or can he apply to take an exam?  Any further suggestions would be appreciated. We live in N. Carolina.
Thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi...

This is a popular question..Often I have students come in who had driven in the past & for one reason or another they gave up their Class 1 or 2 license..

In 1985 a whole new licensing program started with Class A's & B's...The purpose was to bring the drivers to a higher level of knowledge..

I suspect your husband has a lot to offer in the fact that he drove for a number of years. That will be a big asset for him when seeking employement.

I like to make individual assessments of potential students.
He will have to take a number of written tests, and a road test.. Does he take written tests good? Is he good at driving through pilons to show an examiner his skills?
A lot of new laws have come in now, driving times, inspections, equipment updates.

I would tend to lean on a person taking a course or at least a refresher course upon reentering the trucking industry. Try to find a school that is PTDIA certified or at least follows their curriculum. JObs are surely plentiful.

Good luck in your new Career...
