Truck Repair: m 11 will not run, warning lights, digit code

I have an 98 int truck with an m11. when i try to start it the warning eng light comes on it will only run for a min or two but it is like its getting to much fuel or no air. it blows a lot of black smoke and misses really bad. If u do get it to run u have to hold the fuel wide open and the warning lights will come and go and the engine will miss. I have no clue what is wrong?

If your engine is Celect plus, then you need to get the fault code displayed. It is a 3 digit code read through the blinking of light after a fairly long pause different from the normal pause. Try to read the code and let me have the result so I can offer some advice or visit the nearest Cummins garage.
