Truck Repair: Gears wont engage at first, differential fluid, dodge dealer

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1996 Dodge Ram 350 diesel Cummins 6 cyl. dually. When it hasn't run for a week or so and you start it, you can shift into Drive and it won't go anywhere at first, then when you give it the gas again it will start to move then. Does this have anything to do with the differential fluid level?

ANSWER: Hi Raymond,
It sounds to me like a transmission issue. check your fluid level. When you shift into drive does it just rev up and not go any where? Does it do this in any other gears ( reverse, 1st, 2nd)? Does it shift normaly when driving?

QUESTION: Hi Matt,
Yes, it just revs up and after a little while it will engage. It does it in reverse also but I never tried in 2nd or 3rd. It does shift normally when -driving. It only does it when I haven't driven it for awhile, and the first time I start it. After that its fine when I start it.

Answer
hey,
it sounds like a valve sticking in the trany...ask a mechanic at your local dodge dealer and see if he knows what it may need for repairs. this is kind of outside my scope. just beware if you take it to a transmission shop they will want to rebuild the thing right off the hop...if it's shifting ok it is probly just one of the spools is sticking but make sure you get several opinions before letting someone tear into it.

sorry I couldn't be more help,

Matt
