Truck Repair: Truck repair, chevrolet pickup, liquid wrench

I have a 1996 Chevrolet pickup and I am having troubles
getting the tailgate to open.  It is sticky and doesn't open up until many times of trying to lift the mechanism.  Is there a way of lubricating it or are there parts that need to be replaced?

Pull the gate clear off, and turn it upside down.
Use a spray can of Liquid Wrench, or some other spray lube, and hose the handle linkage pretty liberally.
Then stand it on each end, and spray the latches, and inside them, working the handle a lot.
