Truck Repair: pitman arm removel, ford f 150, pitman arm

Question
Was wondering if you could tell me how to remove the pitman arm on the steering box on a 1998 ford f-150 4+4, I have a book that goes to 96 and it says to use a puller to remove it from the steering box, but I dont believe there is enough room between the arm and the frame to get a puller in there, does it come off hard or can it be pryed off with out damaging the steering box?  Or do I have to remove the steering box to do it? if so how does the steering shaft connect to the box? Thank-you for any advice you can give for it is getting dangerous to drive and cant afford to take it to the shop. David F.

Answer
You can borrow a pittman arm puller from Autozone, on their loan-a-tool program.
You can also look at manuals free online at www.autozone.com.

I would say loosen the box so you can move it just enough to get the puller in there if needed.
I have pryed and heated them, but you are sure taking a chance of damaging the box or seal, or both.

Their puller shouldn't take up as much room as your average crossbar, or three jaw puller, and might fit right in there.
