Truck Repair: Ignition/Starter Wire Problem, chevy s10 blazer, s10 blazer

Question
Hi Kasey,

I have a 1985 Chevy S10 Blazer, 2.8L V6. I had to replace the starter and when I did, I stretched the small ignition wire that connects to the starter. I put the new starter with the shims on correctly and hooked the small ignition wire and larger batter cables up correctly. The problem is when I try to turn it over with the key it doesn't do anything, but if I hold the key all the way on the starter starts smoking! I thought that maybe I shimmed it up wrong but after replacing it again several times I decided to try something else. I turned the key so that it was in the 'on' position and then took a small screwdriver and 'jumped' the starter. It turned over perfect. Question: How do I fix that small ignition wire that runs to the starter? I stretched it pretty good trying to get the old starter off. I mean REALLY good. Is this an easy fix or would I be better offer, jumping it off and driving it down to 'Joe's' which has testers and such? How much time involved to fix?
Thanks for any info!
~Scott

Answer
well that wire used to be about 12g wire and now it sounds like its 16g "smaller" when you try to put that much electic trough a small wire you get smoke its getting hot.just follow that wire back to where its normal size and cut it off. get a butt conector and splice a new section of the right size wire on this isn't hard and should only take about 15 min.thanks
