Truck Repair: valve adjustments, dodge cummings, valve adjustments

Question
Cliff
I have owned my 1997 dodge Cummings since it was new and never did anything on the engine except oil and fuel filter. It is a great motor. But at 192000 miles I'd like to adjust the valves. I've done mechanical lifters on Gas engines and people tell me it's basically the same. I have a Chilton’s book but it seems vague. What is this TDC button? How do engage it and then pull it out? And a quick procedure on adjustments.
Thanks in advance

Answer
I dont use the timing plunger for valve adjustment because it is a pain to get out.I remove all the valve covers & turn engine until either the #1 or #6 valves are rocking(overlapping}meaning intake will be closing & exhaust starts to open when turning engine backwards. Then adjust the valves for the right set then turn engine 360 degrees and adjust the rest of the valves. The valve clearances are Int 0.010 & Exh 0.020.It is ALOT easier to turn engine backwards from the alt pulley nut.
