Question -
i have a 1998 GMC suburban that doesnt want to shift into drive with the key forward amd the truck on. I have to turn of the truck then put the key forward in a certain position then i can shift it into neutral then turn on the truck then shift it to gear. after i put it in park its the same story again

Answer -
You could have a couple of problems --- binding selector linkage -- a problem with the shift interlock in the column - or a brake interlock. -- Does the truck go into reverse ok from park?
no it does not go anywhere from park

Answer
I believe that your problem is in the steering column - it is directly related to the shift / brake interlock.  If you have not had much experience with late model / vehicles with air bags - then I don't recommend poking around in the column -- this type of problem should be addressed by a dealer or a mechanic familiar with late model vehicles.   Also check this website --- autorecalls.org maybe your vehicle is part of an already identified problem.

Thank you.
