Truck Repair: Loss of power 2001 dodge dually 5.9 24valve, bosch vp44, dodge dually

Question
I have been really happy with my truck until a recent
problem surfaced. In the morning, upon first start, the
engine starts with no problem. If I immediatly leave, the
engine acts as if it has no power. The top speed is little
more than 45 mph. After about a half a mile, the engine
"comes to life" and its as if I am being shot from a
slingshot. If the engine however, is allowed to warm up for
a few minutes, there is no problem with the power.
I have checked the lift pump, it is fine. The intake heater
does not engauge as the temp is well above 60F here in
north Louisiana. I was told by a dodge mechanic that it was
probably the injector pump timing and that the whole
pump woould need to be replaced? What are your thoughts?
Thanks
Bryan

Answer
I hate to say that those old Bosch VP44 pumps are junk. They have been inproving them with the newer pumps. It is probably the injection pump.Dont get it from Dodge, get it from a Cummins dealer.Since you are in N Louisiana, the closest distibutor is Jackson,MS phone # 601-932-2720 for parts. If you want to install it yourself, call them to ship it to you or just to price check.
