Truck Repair: Gear shift indicator misaligned, neutral safety switch, shift indicator

Question
The gear shift on our 1999 Expedition has become misaligned. Instead of "P", the gear shift points to "R" when the vehicle is in Park. "R" shows "N" and "D" point to "2" when we are driving.

It may be related, but at times the engine does not start unless we re-seat the gear into "park".

 What could be wrong and is this an expensive repair?

Hello Eric,
Sounds like some adjustments to the indicator, and the neutral safety switch may be required.
They are on the steering column, below the dash.
Not expensive, just kinda hard to get to.
Check the linkage also for missing grommets, or worn out holes.
