Truck Repair: toyota tacoma, toyota tacoma, engine mounts

Question
I have a 1999 tacoma. My vehicle makes a thumping noise when I change speeds or take off from a complete stop. My mechanic says that I need new motor mounts. He wants 380.00 to change them. I have 70000 miles. He said there is nothing wrong with the transmission. My mechanic put my car in drive held down the brake and hit the gas to show me how the engine "rocks" and causes the thump. Is this typical for four wheel drive? Should the engine be able to bounce for off road use? should I repalce the engine mounts? is 380 a fair price? thanks alot

Answer
Hello Elena,
The engine should be able to rock a certain amount, but that is what the motor mounts are for, and if they are broken or worn out, then they could indeed be the cause of the thump. Was he able to show you the thump?
It is typical for four or two wheel drive. Both need the cushion effect of the mount, without being totally loose.

If the mounts are shot, they should be replaced.

$380.??hard to say. Seems like I might be able to do it for less, but if that includes the mounts and labor, it could be in the ball park. He can't do it for nothing.
You can price the mounts at a parts house, even over the phone, and look at them to see if you can do it yourself. I know some women that can do anything a man can do to a vehicle, even with polished nails,  and most motormounts are do-able in the driveway. But I have seen some that can really make a pretty nice person cuss, also. I just don't have a way to know about Tacoma mounts.
You also have every right to get another opinion from a different shop.
