Truck Repair: Diesel wont start, injector pump, hot hole

Question
I have a 1994 Suburban with 6.5 turbo diesel. It started bucking and died along the road. After only a few seconds it would start up and make it a few hundred yards, then die again. After making it home, I figured it was the fuel filter. I replaced the filter, but now can't get it to start. Is it just being a hard starting diesel or do you think theres something else happening? The engine was completly rebuilt less than a year and a half ago.

Answer
Hello Ken,
First, make sure you bleed all the air out of the system.
If you didn't do that with the filter change, you may have air in the injector pump and lines, and it can be a pain to get it out. Loosening some injector nuts is the best way, after you bleed the filter.

Now...there are two problems with that era 6.5.
One is the FSD module. Go to Google and do a search for FSD cooler modification, if you never had it done. That is a Fuel injector pump solenoid, and the mod is for a way to get it up out of that hot hole it is in, and cool it.

The other problem is the injector pump itself. There is a free replacement for some of them for a lot of years, unlimited miles...10 years I think, but that might miss you. The problem could be the same though. I just got a free one on a 95, which was doing the same thing...just dying while driving.
So if the old filter wasn't especially dirty, you might have your friendly dealership run the vin, and see if there is a recall or campaign that would cover it.
