Truck Repair: Engine types, cummins engines, seal leaks

Question
Cliff,
I see you only work on Cummins engines, but maybe since your in the repair business you may still be able to help me.
I am adding a unit to our familys small fleet( 2 trucks) and we have always had cummins or Cat engines. I see many trucks for sale with the detroit 12 liter 60 ser Do you know have these engines had problems, we had detroits yrs ago and they were very bad( 92 ser) Anything you may have heard about any of the major 3 I should avoid?
Thanks
Don

Answer
As you know Cat parts are pricey.Detroit engines are O.K. I guess, besides the "football" seal leaks.Really depends on if you are looking for new or used trucks. What size of truck.Honestly they ALL have some kind of problem.Seeing that you are looking at the 60 Series, that means you are looking at a larger tractor like a FLD 120.The N14 was a good engine, they just didnt pass the new emmission laws.Depending on the age of truck you are looking for depends on what engine to get.We have had a few little problems with the new EGR engines, usually a sensor problem,EGR valve or something small like that.As for Cummins,I can tell you everything about those.I dont get to see or work on the new Cat,Detroits,or Macks.
