Truck Repair: 1987 F150 no start, ford f150 4x4, starter solenoid

Question
I did replace that relay (which I mistakenly referred it as a solenoid in my question) and still cannot start engine with the key. So i know the starter is good and relay is good. I made sure the coneection at the starter was not a problem and did look for bad grounds. Still have the problem. Still looking and scratching my head.

Since the resident Ford expert is maxed out, I'm sure you will be able to help. I recently bought an 87 Ford F150 4X4 4spd 6cyl. To start it, I have to cross the starter solenoid. Since it starts, I'm guessing the starter or the solenoid is not the problem. Can you point out the potential problem area(s) or point me in the general direction. Thanks. Its my 1st standard 4X4 and can't wait to abuse it.

In a 87 I believe there is a starter relay  on the passenger side inner fender. It should be either a 3 wire or 4 wire relay.  If you do have a relay on the fender, cross the 2 large terminals, if the starter engages then you need to replace that relay, and your problym should be cured.

Answer
On you new starter relay there should be a rubber coated 90deg small wire connection.  This is your exciter wire.  Using a test light; see if that wire gets power when you turn the key to start.  If it does not get power you will need to trace that wire back into the cab and see if there is a break in it.  That wire basically goes from the key to the relay.
