Truck Repair: 1992 F-150 6cyl/92,000 mi/4x2/ECC module, crankshaft position sensor, loose wires

Question
Van, My 1992 F-150/6cyl/4x2 will start, idle smoothly, then run for ten miles. It will then misfire, and die. Restarting won't work, I've had to tow it home twice. I have had it on a scope and have checked/cleaned all the sensors. It has a new exhaust, plugs, wires, dist.cap&rotor, belt, battery, starter, air filter. I don't know what to check next. HELP! THANKS

Answer
Hi Kurt,
When it won't start, check to see if there is spark to the plug wires.
If so, then I would check fuel possibilities, like no vent to the tank,(Remove the gas cap), or plugged filter, or fuel pump.
If there is no spark, check for loose wires first, but I bet you already have.
A heat related intermittent could be the ECC, but could also be a cam or crankshaft position sensor.

But first narrow it down to spark or fuel. A little shot of starting fluid, if it causes a hit, can tell if there is spark.
