Truck Repair: Dodge 1998 No lights work only hazard lights, independent mechanic, fusible links

Question
I have a dodge dakota 1998, and none of my lights are working only the hazard lights. No turning signals no headlight. I asked over phone for estimate to fix they said 200.00-300.00. That they would have to replace the wiring harness. Is this true or are they trying to take a women for a ride? Please Help

Thanks

Answer
Hello Eva,
If they told you that without taking a good look at the truck, they are the type of place that give mechanics a bad name.
A real mechanic would do some testing and checking before saying something like that. I suggest you never let your shadow darken their doorway.

Fuses, or fusible links would be what I would check, followed by wire connections and switches.
There is no way I would say you need a wire harness unless you told me they were all chewed up by rodents, or all melted. And even then I would look first.

Get some recommendations for an independent mechanic who is trustworthy, and believe me there are plenty of us, and have him take a look before deciding.

Good luck,
Van
