Truck Repair: Wheels & Tires, fender flares, wheels and tires

Question
Hi Van,
I have a 2004 Dodge Ram pickup with 17" wheels and tires. It's a 4 wheel drive and I would like to put a little more radical tire on it for snow and ice. The rims are 17x8". Do you know if I can put 17x10" rims and tires on it? Thanks, Mike

Answer
Hi Mike,
That's one of those "try it" things. If the tires don't rub on anything that will cut them, it should be ok.
But when you are turning at an intersection, for example, and there is a dip, or change of pitch to the road, the tires may hit the top of the fender edge, and actually bend the sheet metal.
Generally speaking, the 4X4's have a little more clearance, but I have several in my fleet, and I just put up with the occasional rubbing and slightly bent fender flares, in favor of the larger tires, and better traction.
