Truck Repair: 2000 Silverado Z 71 temp gauge ..., stock radiator, fan clutch

Question
Dear Van,

Houston is very hot, when I idle my truck for about 20min in 95-100 degree temp, my gauge will rise to well over the center point...Do I need a larger radiator? If so what do you recommend? If even this will help, or will it throw off the computer sytem in the truck ? Please advise,  Thanks again,

Answer
Hi Johnny,
A larger radiator would not have anny effect on the computer.
As for the stock radiator, it could be dirty with bugs and grass seed, or the fins could be bent over not allowing air to flow through.
The fan clutch is usually what causes heating in the situations you describe. It is intended to engage and pull air while sitting. When driving down the road, the air is forced through by speed.
If it is cooling ok going down the road, air must be getting through, and the tubes must be clean enough to perform ok, so the fan clutch, or belt is where I would look.
If that has an electric fan motor, I would check that system.
