Truck Repair: won t accelerate when in drive, plug wires, fuel pump

Question
I have a 1985 blazer V-6 2.8 liter. When I accelerate I have to let it do so slowly. If I give to much pedal it will try to die. I have changed the plug wires, carburator, rotor, fuel pump with no sucess.

Answer
Hi Don,
Normally, that is from a worn accelerator pump in the carburetor. With the engine off, look down the throat and stroke the throttle to full, and see if you get a good healthe slug of gas squirted in there.
If you don't, that carb may have sat on the shelf too long.
If you do, then the advance in the distributor is where I would look.
