Truck Repair: truck wont start, battery cables, starter problem

Question
My father in laws 1985 GMC high Sierra won't start. It'll just click when the key is turned. We checked the battery and it's charged. Headlights come on no problem. Could this be a starter problem? A while before this you would turn the key, it would click a few times then start but now, nothing.

Thanks

Answer
Hello Angel,
If you have a volt meter, check the voltage at the starter while cranking, and see if it stays up close to 12 volts.
If not, or if you don't have a meter, remove the battery cables, and make sure that the contact areas of the battery and the cables is clean to shiny metal.
If you do already have clean cables, and the ground cable on the block is clean and tight, then a starter may be needed.
A current draw test would tell you for sure.Van
