Truck Repair: engine leaking fluid, radiator fluid, 1994 chevy 1500

Question
Just noticed my 1994 chevy 1500 v6 w/115000 is leaking a fluid in the front lower part of the engine. My guess is that its radiator fluid, with some type of seal gone bad? I will keep an eye on the cooling fluid level the next few days, also have a 1300 mile drive shortly will it make it? thanks

Answer
Hi Alex,
It is probably the water pump seal. You can tell by looking under the pump, which may require a mirror. There is a weep hole in the bearing housing to keep the coolant out of the bearings.
If the bearings are good, and the coolant is kept full, it could very well make the trip, but then again, it could just lock up, of come apart at the worst possible time, also.
If it is leaking, it will need replaced soon, so might as well be before the trip.
Check and replace the fan clutch also, since if it is what caused the pump to wear out, it will do the same to the replacement pump.
