Truck Repair: 1986 Chevy 3/4 ton, 2WD.......350 - 5.7, freeze plug, casting sand

Question
On a 1986 Chevy 3/4 ton, 2WD truck with a 350 - 5.7.....the freeze plug on the rear of the block driver side directly behind where the flange manifold and the exhaust pipe bolt together seems difficult to remove & install.  Is there a trick to doing it without removing the manifold or using a cheap rubber imitation freeze plug? Im not as concerned about removing it but being able to install an OEM freeze plug.  Is there a trick to this?    thx

Answer
Lucky, I apologize for not answering your question sooner.  Use a rubber type aftermarket freeze plug.  The only reason freeze plugs are in engine blocks is to allow the casting sand to be poured out.  If you want to use an OEM freeze plug, you have to remove the manifold.  Make sure you clean the freeze plug location well before installing.  I recommend using aviation form-a gasket around the edge of the freeze plug before installing it. Hope this helps.
