Truck Repair: surging, dodge pickup, advance mechanism

Question
I have a 1984 dodge pickup 2wd,auto,approx. 115,000 miles,2bbl holley. At steady speed it feels like it is surging. It has new plug wires and the plugs, fuel filter, and air filter have low miles. Also it has had the intake removed and all the carbon buildup removed from the exhaust passage. If you have any suggestions on this problem, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you

Answer
Hi Chuck,
First, unplug the EGR valve, plug the hose, just to see if it might be opening and closing.
If that isn't it, reconnect it.
Then you might want to check the float in the carb.
If it has a brass float, shake it and see if it has fuel in it due to a leak.
If it has the composite float, it might be saturated, and heavy. There is a scale to weigh them, and a chart, but it needs to be done as soon as the float is removed so gas doesn't evaporate and lighten it up.
Then make sure it is adjusted correctly.
Only other thought would be advance mechanism springs worn, or the mechanism sticking.
Check the transmission fluid also, to see if it is foaming. Be sure to check it in the proper gear so it isn't overfull.Van
