Vintage Cars: 71 Automatic Tranny, restoration shop, trans fluid

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1971 Type 3 Fastback that I just got on the road, however I found that I have no reverse on the car.  The car has been setting up for almost two years until I found this restoration shop that took it and got it running.  In the two weeks they had it, my main objective was to get it running and I forgot to mention to them about the transmission not going into reverse.  I'm hoping that it is something that I can do here myself and not have to call the shop and put it back in.

ANSWER: have you checked the linkages , both at the shifter base and along side of tranny?  Is the fluid clean and up to level.  Has the tranny been serviced, pull the pan change ther filter ?

Rule out the basics first , may just be linkage or need a good clean and refill, OR it may be the tranny itself.  Let me know what you find

QUESTION: Ron,
I checked the trans fluid level and it was full and a good pink color.  It had no burn smell to it especially since I drove it over to a friends body shop which is about ten miles from my house.  During the drive it seemed to shift a little rough and would not shift into Drive, so it turned out to be a very slow drive to the body shop.  My next task is to get jacked up and check out the linkages, but what specifically am I looking for?

Answer
if it has sat for awhile I would drop pan and change fluid and filter just as a good measure.
Linkages will be along side of tranny and to tranny tunnel, just look for loose , broken , missing bushings, parts springs ect.  You may need to get a manual to see of it is missing anything
