Vintage Cars: Engine identifications, turbo hydramatic, corvette mike

Question
Hi Ron. I hope you're the same Ron, with knowledge of Chevy big block engine i.d. codes. I recently purchased a rebuilt 1969 427 Corvette engine on Ebay. At Least it was advertised as a 1969 Corvette engine. The casting # is 3955270. The pad or deck #'s are T1204LE. and next to that is Y9Y025798. Doing my own research here on the net, the casting # identifies it as a 1969 427 engine. It doesn't however specify Corvette, or any other 1969 Chevy cars, that also came with 427's. Just that it is a 427. The pad engine code, comes back as being built at the Tonawanda plant, on December 4th, and is a 427-335HP, mated to a turbo-hydramatic. It doesn't specify what model Chevy car it went into, but I know it wasn't a Corvette, because the horsepower ratings for the 427's in Corvette's ranged from 390 to 435HP. The seller even put in the ad, 385-435HP. Can you tell me from the partial vin # Y9Y025798, what model Chevy car this was installed in at the factory. Also, time is of the essence, because Corvette Mike's here in Anaheim, Ca. will be installing this motor into my vintage 1966 Corvette, probably within the week. Could you also tell me the approximate difference in value, between a rebuilt 1969 427-390HP Corvette engine, and a 1969 427-335HP passenger car engine.(Which I believe this motor probably is.) As I'm going to have to decide whether to keep this engine, or ship it back to the seller, because of false advertising. Any help would be greatly appreciated. One other thing Ron, the motor coming out of my Corvette is a mystery. All I know is, it's a 283. Casting # is 3849852, and pad # is F1218D. Could you tell me the year, and what it came out of originally? Thanks, Mike. Todays date is 1/20/2012.

Answer
Hey Mike
Tough questions
first off you are correct that is a 69 427 your pad inforamtion is correct, but the number you think is a partial VIN is not, at least for 1969 Chevy ,which were all 13 digits , the first 6 being numbers, I am not sure what this number is for
however
My literature on casting numbers indicates the folowing'
3955270  1969  427  2/4 main ,   335, 390, 400, 425, 430, 435 HP
BUT your  engine code ending in LE does not show up under 1969 suffix listing for vettes

Corvette Engine Code Stamping Numbers
All engines are stamped with an engine ID code which consists of a prefix and a suffix. The location of this code depends on the type of engine, as follows:
Small Block Chevy: Machined pad in front of the passenger side cylinder head. Often hidden by the alterator.
Big Block Chevy: Above timing chain cover.
The prefix portion of the ID code tells you the assembly plant code, and the engine's
production date (for example, 0701 = July 1st....no year is indicated). The suffix portion
tells you the original model year / engine / transmission / car combination when it went
down the assembly line.
Abbreviations: AB = Air Brakes, AR = Air Injector Reactor, CA = California, HD = Heavy Duty, hdc
= heavy duty clutch, HP = High Performance, LP = Liquid Propane Gas, PG = Powerglide, mt =
manual trans, mt-3, 3 speed manual, SHP = Special High Performance, TH = Turbo Hydramatic,
ti = transistor ignition. Induction is one (1) 4 barrel carburetor unless specified.

Engine ID Code Example: V0107CLJ -
(V = Plant, 01 = January, 07 = 7th Day, CLJ = Engine Suffix Code)

LE is not listed

I think you have a 1969 427 but not matched to vette
value, depends on audience , pure vette folks will want matching numbers or engine correct car, others it may not matter.  for vette purists it may make the difference in the sale, they simply wont want it . For basic car guys , probably not a huge issue , but certainly 20% less value because of HP
good luck
