Vintage Cars: 1980 450 sl, fuel injection system, local shop

Question
Hi there:

My car has about 139,000 miles and it is stored in the winter to keep it protected from the snow, cold. I am in the NJ/NY area. it was in the garage all winter and I took it out a few days ago to get new tires. Most of the winter the battery was unattached because when I keep it attached- and do not start it - it gets cold and the battery drains and it will not start. I found that detaching the battery keeps the battery from draining when the car is not being driven. I have a feeling an alarm system that was not removed completely (prior to my owning it) drains the battery as every time I start it when it is drained an alarm sound goes off the first time and then the car is dead.  but everyone says that can't be because it would drain all the time if there was an alarm component still in the car. moving on...

I took the car in to a local shop I used once before (new to the area) the car needed new tires.  and this was the first day I had it back on the road. I had two different sets (sizes) so I had ordered new tires. they checked the car and put on the new tires and they said, (the owner) of the shop said it was only firing on 6 of the 8 cylinders. i told him it had been in the garage for months not driven and it had very little fuel in the car. he said he wanted to do a test for $125 to check it-that is could be either the spark plugs or the fuel injection system. the latter of the two was very expensive and he thought it was most likely the first thing. the mechanic went in and looked at the spark plugs and had to increase the spark level as some of the connectors/wires were older and they were not matched. he said with this adjustment it was now firing on all 8 cylinders and we had to each it for a few weeks to see if any of the wires needed to be replaced and or/if it was the fuel injection system. to see if this minor fix did the trick. he charged me $75.

Not sure why- but it sounds a bit odd. Can you manually adjust the level of the sparks going into the spark plugs on this vehicle?

Also there is a reputable, honest, affordable, experienced Mercedes mechanic in the Morristown, NJ area that you may have heard on that works on older Mercedes?

Thank you for your time.

Answer
The K jet system is a fuel regulation system, fuel delivery can be adjusted but I am not sure what he meant by spark adjustment. In the Kjet system there is not an ajustement to turn on or turn off the plugs, Perhaps he was just checking the resistance of the spart wires ?? not sure

You can unplug your alarm system completely at the box, may be under the mat on the passenger side
Your battery drain can simply be through the clock, or through the ground system
http://www.onlybenz.com/  good place in NJ, not sure if that is close to you
