Vintage Cars: 1971 XKE, xke, oil pressure

Question
Jo;
    I have a 4.2 XKE. When I start the car the oil pressure is about 40#. When it gets up to temperature is drops down to 20# or lower. Any idea what I should be looking at in order to correct this? The car does not make any strange noises nor does it overheat.
Thanks

Answer
Hi Don--

It depends whether those are idling or running pressures. 40 psi cold and 20 hot (or even 15) is fine for idling. But anything < 30 when running hot (say, => 1500 rpm) is low.

Two possibilities, one easy.

1) If you're not using 20/50W, change to that. I don't know the XKE specifications, but most engines of that vintage specify thick oil (but perhaps 10/40W would be OK for winter). Don't use modern-engine oils like 5/20 or 10/30W.

A parallel comment...if you're in a really hot place and don't have an oil cooler, consider installing one...

2) Much much more expensive is a crankshaft bearing job, both the main bearings and the big ends (rod bearings). I would suggest at least two quotes from reputable XKE-familiar people for such a job, and contact the owners club for suggestions as well. But that will be serious money.

The "no noises" is good. Bearing rattle is easily noticeable, usually when cold. So I'd be inclined to say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it (yet!).

Best of luck

Jo
