Vintage Cars: 1975 mgb, chrome bumpers, rear fenders

Question
am looking at a 1975 mgb ,has retrofitted chrome bumpers, weber carb. good paint,3rd owner, wire wheels approx. 106 k miles, what would be a good value price? also what should i look at before buying, maybe?? it does not have overdrive. thanks!

Answer
I don't know values, but I would guess less than $5K. The bumpers and Webers are pluses, but the lack of O/D is less good. You should somehow get the car up on a lift or ramps and look carefully for rust in/behind rocker panels, rear fenders, trunk floor. Tapping with a light hammer is also useful to distinguish between metal and filler. (Paint hides lots of bad things!). If it still looks good, ask to take it for a drive: idle OK?; OK at 5000 rpm?; etc. On deceleration-then-power check for smoke out the pipe (bad rings or valve seals). And if possible check compression: should be 100 or so.

Good luck!
