Vintage Cars: 1982 mercedes 380sl, timing chain, fuel filter

Question
I just bought a 380sl and don't know the history on it.  The car seems to start and run fine when cold but after warming up it has no power at all at times.  This happens only sometimes.  Other times it runs good cold or warm. I replaced the spark plugs and the ones I took out look to be sooty.  Where should I start looking?

Answer
most common cause of lack of power is bad injectors, high control pressure,or worn out tune up parts or incorrect tune up specs
Could be as simple as a fuel filter.

plugs, points, dwell, timing , all need to be checked
What color were the plugs - dark = running rich, light = lean
how many miles?
Do you have a sinlge timing chain or has it been upgraded?
When was last complete service
Does it burn oil

the more info you give me  , the more i can help
Good luck
