Vintage Cars: Chevy Big Block ID, chevy big block, machined pad

Question
QUESTION: Hi Ron,
I saw your answer to a previous question and have the same problem regarding the engine ID stamped on a BB chevy.  Mine reads:

T08311AR  6  L105024

The two ones in the first part of the code look more like I's but I am assuming they are ones to make the date code work correctly.  The block casting is 385961 which puts the engine in the 66-67 time frame.  Any ideas?

ANSWER: I need a little more information , where were these numbers found?  The engine ID usually has 8 characters , some BB has vin stamped by the engine ID

QUESTION: The first numbers I gave you were stamped on hte machined pad at the front of the engine. The T is Towanda and 08-31 is the date, but it falls apart from there.

Correction to the Block casting number: 3855961 on Bell housing flange.

Also I pulled the engine and got the casting and date codes for the heads  3872701 A31 6 and the intake 8886948 A18 6 repsectivly which tells me the engine is a 1966 I think.

Answer
that helps, I beleive you have a 1966-67 396 out of a Chevelle.
casting dates would point it to have been made in 66  January 31 and 18th , so probably used in a 1967

I am still researching the other stamped numbers, they are not making much sense
