Vintage Cars: 1979 Beetle - gas fumes, fuel delivery system, gasket leaks

Question
QUESTION: Hi - just found a nice '79 - driving it for the first time cold weather required top up - gas fumes very bad inside.  Rumor is filler neck causes that - but can't see any leaks, looks good to me.  Any other ideas?  And what is that funky long white plastic thing that fuel lines come out of tank and flow into and around that hangs inside front end... some kind of recirc. thing?

Thanks

ANSWER: those hoses going to the white plastic thing are vent hoses for the fuel vapors, make sure all are connected and without cracks. Make sure the connections are tight.  Carb gasket leaks is another area that creates fumes.  A worn gas cap can be an issue as the system is designed for negative pressure.  Look closely in the engine bay for "wet" areas it does not take a big leak to create a big smell.

QUESTION: And what is that white thing called? - scouring various parts catalogs and can't find it... in case it or surrounding hoses need replacing.

Parts sources? Found Mid-America, Wolfsburg West, jbug...
MA looks to be the best source.

Thanks again!!

Answer
I would think it would be called the evaporation system, gas tank vent system or similar.  Rule out the obvious first , wet gaskets around the carb or other leaks along the fuel delivery system. What happens when you remove the gas tank cap, does it make a noise. like a vacuum?
