Vintage Cars: 1983 Mercedes 280 European model, slow onset, fine spray

Question
QUESTION: Hi Ron, I have a problem with a 1983 mercedes 280. When I decelerate to turn (right or left) and then try to accelerate after turning, she splutters like she is starving of fuel. She sometimes does this on hills too if there is pressure on the engine.

I have replaced the coil, the ignition relay, replaced the fuel pump, cleaned out the fuel lines, replaced the fuel filter. The plugs and leads have all been checked and appear OK. At this stage I seem to be running out of options. Any ideas?

Thanks, Roger.

ANSWER: well I need a little more information

How many miles on the car?
As it trys to stall do the RPMS lower?
Sudden onset or slow onset of symptoms?
Any gas smell under hood?
Any smoke out exhaust?
what color are the plug tips?
does the coil get hot?
Does it have AC and is it on?
Have you check fuel pressure?
Valve lash been done/ timimg?
Let me know and we will see if we can figure this out

QUESTION: Hi Ron,

Answers to your questions:

1) Approximately 200,000 miles on the car
2)I have not noticed the RPMS lowering as it trys to stall, but will check this out this-morning
3) It started with the car just stopping one day after turning sharp left out of a driveway. Local mechanic thought it was a relay problem. Prior to that the car was getting increasingly difficult to start from cold.
4)No Gas smell uder the hood
5)No smoking from the exhaust, at least no more than it has had for the last 18 months (which is the length of time I have had it)
6)Plug tips were fine (according to the local mechanic) but have been replaced in any event to be sure to eliminate that from the equation.
7)Coil gets warm but not hot.
8) This model does not have AC
9) Fuel pressure appears fine (again according to two mechanics I have had looking at it as well. She emits a fine spray of petrol when key is turned to the first position.
10) Fuel pressure appears fine (again according to the mechanics)
11) I know nothing about valve lash/timing. (Sorry !!!) But as far I as I know nothing has been done in that area in the last 18 months.

Many thanks for your help, as you can appreciate this has me baffled and frustrated.

Roger.

Answer
well then , thanks for the information
I have a few suggestions as you seem to have most things covered

Battery - how old is it?  It MAY be a simple fix  I have seen where worn batteries repond to positional stress ( I'll spare you the details)

make sure fuel screen in tank has been cleaned

Fuel starved because of vapor lock?  Try driving with the gas cap slightly loose

Fuel rail pressure - make sure it is up to specs , check when warm to hot - be careful here

Timing should be set to Euro specs - I think it may be 30 degrees BTDC
lastly

make sure rotor cap and points are not worn to the point where stress forces can cause non contact

If it were me and the battery is old > 4 years - start there

Let me know
