QUESTION: Using numbers on engine, body, car overall etc can I find whether my 83 MB  380 sl has single or double  timing chain
Without any parts removal?  thanks

Answer
if it is a US version 83 /380 it most likely has single unless upgraded.  many were.
Take off the oil fill cap, using a dental mirror or similar shine light in and look to see if you have a single or double row   You should be able to manipulate the mirror and light in such a way as to see the chain
