Vintage Cars: 65 Volvo 1800S, ventilation hole, overflow problem

Question
The front float chamber has a ventilation hole under the intake gas line with a metal cover.  The manual reflects a ventilation hole and washer.  Should there be a rubber washer between the cover and hole.  The top of the float chamber is quite often wet.  Thanks.

Answer
That is my most interesting question since I volunteered for this stuff; and I thought I knew these sorts of deails well. But apparently not...

I used to have a 66 122S, twin 1-1/2 SUs, and they're certainly the same carbs as on my Healey, and should be very similar to yours. But your description doesn't quite match with my knowledge. The carbs I know have a copper ventilation *pipe* (1/4 inch) in line with, or at right angles to, the incoming fuel pipe, and you can attach a piece of high-temp tubing to it for the overflow in case the float jet gets dirty. It seems the pipe that I know is not there in your case. In any case the hole (or pipe) is for maintaining the float chamber at atmospheric.

So, I'm afraid I would probably need a picture to sort it out. But I would guess, if it's wet, that you have an overflow problem, and to check/clean the float needle/valve. And check/replace the paper gasket under the float chamber top. On the question of the washer; sorry, don't know; but I would doubt it will make much difference to the leaking problem. Certainly don't block off the vent.

It occurs to me that the person you need is Colin Powell, who is a real Volvo expert!
