Vintage Cars: 210 body style, buick skylark, gm cars

Question
what does the number 210 stand for on early model chevys when it refers to the 210 body style

Answer
In the 50's, GM cars had production model numbers, later replaced by letters.  As they were designing a new car, it was easier to use a number to refer to the project they were working on, since the name may not have been chosen till just before the car was introduced.  Remember when GM brought out the "X" cars for 1980?  Chevy Citation, Buick Skylark, Olds Omega, etc...   They were all basically the same car, but the names weren't settled on till a few years after development began.  So, they were first called "X" cars until the names were chosen.

Anyways, getting back to the 210, the model number during development (and for serial-number purposes) was 2100.  Chevrolet just left off the last digit and called it the 210.
